Barcelona Pavilion
The German Pavilion for the 1929 exposition, reconstructed in the 1980s, is defined by a free plan and flowing material planes.
Walls slide through space rather than enclosing conventional rooms. Marble, onyx, glass, and water form one composition.
Furniture, including the Barcelona Chair, extends the architecture and embodies Mies’s ideal of disciplined reduction.
Although conceived as a temporary building, its reconstruction is now a central place for studying Mies.
Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
