Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
Wright’s 1959 museum on Fifth Avenue replaced a sequence of galleries with one continuous spiral ramp.
Visitors move through art along a spiral inside the circular rotunda. Circulation becomes the building’s form.
Its stacked white discs contrast sharply with Manhattan’s street grid, making the museum both urban sculpture and institutional symbol.
Despite debates over display walls, slope, and daylight, it transformed the twentieth-century museum type.
