Section and Roof

Plans do not complete space. Height, slope, and roof transform experience.

The thick walls and curved roof of Ronchamp are forms best understood in section. The atmosphere cannot be explained by plan alone.

The suspended roof of Yoyogi and the wave roof of the London Aquatics Centre make structure and silhouette inseparable. Roof becomes facade.

The undulating floor and roof of the Rolex Learning Center divide areas through a continuous section instead of stories.

Beginning with a section sketch can coordinate daylight, ventilation, sight lines, and acoustics. Solving only the plan often leaves the ceiling unresolved.

A roof responds to rain, snow, and sun while carrying symbolism. Flat, pitched, domed, and suspended roofs produce different interiors and skylines.
