Structural Expression

When the frame is visible, a building can explain how it stands.

High-Tech architecture exposes trusses, diagrids, cores, and ducts as a mechanical language. The Pompidou makes services a facade, while HSBC Hong Kong displays assembly through external trusses and modules.

The diagrid of 30 St Mary Axe is both envelope and structure. It resembles an ornamental grid, but the load path is drawn on the surface.

Mies’s steel and glass express regular frame, while Gaudí translated load paths explored through hanging models into stone and columns. Both reveal how forces travel.

Structural expression is not decoration. It makes span, thickness, joints, and buckling limits legible and differs from attaching non-load-bearing imitation structure.

Exposed structure raises questions of maintenance, fire protection, thermal bridging, and urban appearance. Once visible, detailed engineering determines architectural quality.
