Axis
An imaginary centerline that aligns spaces.
In symmetrical buildings, monuments, gardens, and streets, an axis coordinates sight and movement. Doors, domes, fountains, and monuments produce a drama of arrival.
Modernism sometimes breaks or rotates axes to emphasize a free plan. The choice concerns what should be aligned.
Versailles, the Washington Mall, and many temples demonstrate strong axial organization.
