Module
A basic unit governing repeated dimensions, components, or spaces.
Classical proportion used column diameter as a module, while modern grids, panels, parking bays, and hospital rooms align production and operation.
Modules aid extension, replacement, and standardization, but excessive repetition can become monotonous. Design places exceptions within the rule.
Le Corbusier’s Modulor, Japanese tatami and ken, and unitized curtain walls all embody modular thinking.
