Cantilever construction
Temporary works, prestressing, and staged erection safely create structures fixed at only one side.
A completed cantilever behaves differently during construction. Shoring, temporary cables, counterweights, and staged analysis prevent collapse before continuity is achieved.
The open space beneath Fallingwater, projecting museum masses, and MASP is exchanged for large forces in upper members and anchor zones.
Post-tensioning can change deflection sharply before and after stressing. Designed camber determines the final finish level.
Deflection, vibration, and rotation govern comfort as well as strength. A safe structure can still fail in use if it feels unstable.
