Ornament and Natural Form

Ornament may be applied, or it may arise from structure, symbolism, and observation of nature.

At Casa Batlló, Park Güell, and Sagrada Família, forms derived from bone, skin, plants, and geology mingle with structure. Ornament is not separated from load, water, or light.

Modernism often reduced ornament, but material surfaces, joints, proportion, and module took its place. Ornament changed language rather than disappearing.

The saucer mass of the Niterói museum becomes a landmark between landscape and sculpture. It responds to terrain rather than simply imitating nature.

Patterns, tiles, and metalwork can give touch and human scale. Pattern unrelated to structure or use can instead feel superficial.

Strong ornamental architecture is not a sticker-like motif, but the convergence of nature, craft, and structural experiment in one design.
