Atrium

A tall shared interior void that organizes daylight and circulation.

The Roman domestic court developed into the multistory center of modern lobbies, malls, hotels, and offices, often beneath a glass roof.

Smoke control, acoustics, conditioning, and glass maintenance are major concerns. Unlike a large lobby, an atrium visually connects several stories.

Libraries, museums, and headquarters often treat the atrium as an interior public square.
