Transparency and Enclosure

Glass and walls are choices about privacy, security, and symbolism as well as technology.

Farnsworth House and the Barcelona Pavilion thin boundaries until inside and outside blur and landscape becomes an interior finish.

Ando’s concrete boxes close the exterior and admit the world only through courts and openings. Opposite to transparency, they still design the boundary.

The glass Reichstag dome combines circulation with the symbol of visibly open government. Transparency carries a message.

Transparency is not universal. Without control of sun, exposure, energy, and bird collision, it produces discomfort. Coatings, louvers, layered glass, and deep frames make it workable.

Enclosure can create concentration, protection, and sacredness rather than imprisonment. Facade design decides when to open and close.
