Curtain wall

A non-load-bearing exterior wall suspended from the building frame.

A curtain wall transfers its own weight and wind or seismic loads to columns, beams, and slabs without carrying floor loads. Aluminum or steel frames with glass are common.

Thermal bridges, condensation, waterproofing, interstory movement, and maintenance access are central concerns. Construction may use factory-made unitized panels or site-assembled stick systems.

The Seagram Building, Willis Tower, and many office towers shaped a curtain-wall skyline. The key is separation of structure and envelope, not simply the use of glass.
